Hunter recruitment firm benefits from mining
August 07, 2012

The mining industry is full of innovative people. People who use their initiative to solve problems. People who are leaders in their field. And people who help bridge gaps and build local economies.

After spending a few years as a specialist recruiter for heavy industry in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, Peter Maxwell started Maxwell Recruitment in 2010. The family business now has eleven full-time staff, including Peter’s mother and three brothers, and specialises in supplying engineering tradespeople, boilermakers, welders, fitters and electricians to businesses in the Upper Hunter region.

The company started with one office in Hamilton, and thanks to strong demand was able to open a second office in Singleton in 2012. “I felt I could offer a better a service than I was seeing in the marketplace at the time,” Peter says of his decision to start his own business. “I was motivated get the best out of myself and I felt that setting my own business would let me do that.”

Maxwell Recruitment supplies workers on a casual basis, allowing job seekers to move from one project to another with minimal downtime, and providing workshops with the highly skilled workers they need for their projects. Of their 120+ candidates, about 25 work on mine sites, but many of the tradesmen are employed in workshops working on mining equipment and machinery. “At least 80 percent of our workers would be either working on a mine site or for a business that is servicing the coal mining,” says Peter.

It’s just one example of how the strength of the region’s mining industry has helped the business to establish itself as a link between the labour demands of the Upper Hunter and qualified engineering tradespeople seeking project work. “There’s no way I would have opened in Singleton without the mining industry,” says Peter.
