Mine recycles 1.6 million litres of water a day
November 22, 2011

A water filtration plant at BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal’s Appin Mine means the mine can convert saline water into water which can be reused for its mining operations. It recycles around 1.6 million litres of water each day, reduces the need for the company to source fresh water and also reduces the mine’s saline discharges.

The plant was developed in consultation with specialist engineers and government and was opened in December 2006. The plant played a big role in Illawarra Coal winning the ‘largest volume reduction award’ in Sydney Water’s ‘Every Drop Counts Business Program Awards’.
